Project Name: CASK Whisky Vault
Project Statement: CLIENT OBJECTIVES:
• create a lounge that would provide an immersive whisky experience
• maximize amount of bottle display
• incorporate private tasting room opportunities
• have it suit a small plates, Japanese-inspired food program
• attract a wide demographic age range, both Asian and Western
DESIGNERS OBJECTIVES:
• to create a club-like feel of deep relaxation yet thrill
• to create a sense of ‘other world / escapist’
• give our client a space that is easy to market and will deliver on the brand promise
• to create a space easy to operate and maintain
HOW WERE OBJECTIVES ACCOMPLISHED?
• entry vestibule with ‘exploded barrel’ ceiling provides transition to destination
• dark tones relax; natural materials befit luxury; plush rugs soften acoustics
• green (velvet walls, malachite-pattern wallcovering, upholsteries) symbolizes prosperity, good luck, and generosity
• round private tasting room celebrates product; second private room discrete with direct reception access
• custom wood light fixtures play on barrel concepts
• drapery and vertical screens keep views internal
CHALLENGES FACED AND OVERCOME:
• how to interactively display 1000+ bottles? – Guests can easily read labels of up-lit bottles ringing tasting room + additional display at the bar
• how to delicately educate guests? – Artwork represents global whisky producing regions
• how to create sense of belonging for guests? – Private liquor cabinets allow regulars to store favorites
• how to maximize seating but still have private rooms? –round tasting room has wide curved doors to open to main room for general use
RESULTS
• distinctive space is classically stylish and timeless
• quietly nods to Japanese, Scottish, and American influences
• clever and thoughtful allusions to the whisky cask
• celebrates hand craft using specialty finish artisans, custom lighting and furnishings
• equally a place to relax as to celebrate; to be alone or to connect
• space feels like drinking a whisky night and day
• enormous positive guest response – very happy client
