Firm: Ankrom Moisan Architects
Project Name: Holden Of Bellevue Senior Community
Project Statement: Set in Bellevue, Washington, one of Seattle's vibrant upscale neighborhoods, this project is situated within a stunning and natural yet metropolitan backdrop. This project
successfully embraces the urban experience that the residents of this community appreciate and associate with home.
This community was designed with the idea that luxury is the ultimate pinnacle of design. Inspired by our experience in the hospitality sector, this community feels luxuriously rich from the moment you enter. At the main entry, stand a soothing water feature, one you might expect to see at a high-end hotel. A floor-to-ceiling custom glass wall in the entry vestibule showcases a vividly colorful, abstract pattern that creates a dramatic, artistic first impression. The concierge desk is gorgeously appointed, with a full-height chevron backdrop of limestone tile, gold decorative pendants, and a walnut ceiling.
Further inside, the main lobby opens to the living room, bringing a warm, residential feeling to this space. The two-sided gas fireplace, clad in onyx tile, is shared with the equally luxurious dining room. Our material palette is richly textured throughout, with walnut wood, jewel tones, and organic patterns further punctuated by the gold elements in the lighting and decorative metal screens. Stretched fabric acoustical ceilings reduce echoes and background noise, adding to this community's sense of comfort and calm. And of course, our design includes wellness amenities for all residents, including, a well-appointed fitness room for yoga and chair exercises. When necessary, this opens to the adjacent activity room for large-group activities.
Color is used intentionally throughout this project. The memory care palette is grounded by light neutral colors with natural wood accents, creating a calm, soothing environment. Assisted living is livelier, with punches of color and jewel tones throughout, from the amenity spaces to elevator lobbies and corridors. The amenities located on the ground level were designed with bold saturated colors and sparkling metallic accents. This creates a contemporary feel that connects to the vibrant urban fabric of the community.
Community is at the heart of the design and encourages connection between residents; to each other, to their families, and to their city. Residential units are urban-scaled and intentionally designed; meant to anticipate a full dining and activity program, encouraging residents to spend as much time as possible together in their shared amenity and communal spaces. The Salon and Bistro are open to the public which creates opportunities for community connection and engagement.
Mealtime is an essential social anchor in people’s lives, no less so for residents of this community. To offer multiple dining experiences, we designed an open-plan dining room divided into two halves by a partial-height wall with patterned metal screens above. On one side, we designed a two-sided gas fireplace. On the other, an open kitchen with a large, pass-through window and counter-top seating. Dining connects to a covered courtyard giving residents year-round access to the outdoors.
Community—its creation; its growth—is a tremendously important pillar of our design. Every material, detail and layout is intentionally crafted to enhance each residents' sense of well-being and purpose.
