Project Name: The Nines
Project Statement: A typical ground-level conference room (and subsequent ad hoc storage space) presented the owner with a unique and challenging opportunity: revitalize the space to become a desired tenant amenity and support the other ongoing improvements within the tower.
When touring the space for the first time, the design team uncovered 4 signed “Barcelona Chairs” from the lobby of the tower when it opened in 1983. These authentic Barcelona Chairs became the catalyst for embracing the mid-century design vocabulary and the basis for the overall design direction and vibe of the space. The supporting furniture was intentionally an eclectic composition made to feel residential, exclusive, almost like a scene from Mad Men, inherently cool.
The design harkens back to the old “clubhouse” one might have seen in that era, a place to socialize, work, and entertain. Complete with the bronze starburst door, the sunburst mosaic backsplash tile at the bar, and the traditional deep, rich area rugs setting off more classic modernist furniture – with a degree of levity in elements such as the crab side table. We also got a little cheeky and called it The Nines (riffing off the building address, 999 3rd), alluding to all the idioms expressing an elevated sense of fashion, living, or being on the “top.” Dressed to the nines, on cloud nine, etc. there are hidden phrases, images, and Easter eggs that can be like trivia night trying to find them all buried in the art wall imagery. All of this landed in a room used for storage, an unappreciated little space. The idea was to make great use of small and intimate spaces rather than large grand gestures.
On the south and west sides are large window walls, surrounded by exterior terraces that provide the opportunity to extend the interior space physically and visually to the exterior.
“The Nines” was the crowning jewel in repositioning the lobby, which included renovating the fitness and locker rooms, creating an elevated bicycle storage and repair experience, and providing a tenant game/lounge room.
